3 Best-Case Trade Scenarios for the San Francisco Giants at the Deadline

The trade deadline is approaching fast and the San Francisco Giants have yet to make any moves. There are several holes they need to address in order to stay atop the National League West, but very few trade rumors have been swirling around San Francisco.

One of the biggest needs right now is a closer. Brian Wilson is out for the season, Guillermo Mota is still serving his 100-game suspension and Santiago Casilla hasn’t been reliable enough to take over the position. While the Giants’ bullpen is excellent, they want to add more reliable arms that they could throw out in the late innings.

First base is a struggle right now as well. Brandon Belt is having issues—except at the end of games, lately—and then you have Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, and Hector Sanchez, once he returns. There’s the option of moving Sandoval permanently to first and looking for a third baseman, or keeping the panda on the left side and going for some power hitting first baseman.

The outfield also has some problems. Melky Cabrera continues to make that offseason trade look genius, but Angel Pagan has cooled and Gregor Blanco has been seeing more time on the bench lately. Both could pick up at any time, but a power outfielder would be a great pickup.

The San Francisco Giants are taking a different approach to trading than last year. Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News wrote that the Giants would not be moving top prospects and that they would be solving the first base problem internally. So there’s that.

In a seller’s market, everyone is going to be pricey. Many available players may not end up being within the Giants’ intended range and it’s looking like there will not be huge moves in San Francisco. Still, these are a few guys that could certainly give the Giants a boost.
